In the Spring of 2018, Friends of the Lakewalk began planting pollinator gardens along the Lakewalk in partnership with Duluth Monarch Buddies and the Arrowhead Chapter of Wild Ones native plant organization. Now 8 pollinator plots along the Lakewalk are maintained by these groups. The Monarch butterfly population in particular has dropped significantly in the past 20 years owing to habitat loss and the use of pesticides. The new pollinator plots along the Lakewalk are part of an effort throughout North America to help revive monarch populations and other pollinators. Watch for milkweed along the I-35 Corridor, a perfect monarch highway with lots of milkweed, the only food source for monarch caterpillars.
